12. On Allah's Sight and Hearing: Argument from the Prophetic Hadith. (Kitāb al-Tawḥīd (The Book on Monotheism) by Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. Khuzaymah)

9: ON Allah’s Sight and Hearing

9. Arguments from the Prophet Ḥadīth

The Prophetic ḥadīths corroborate the Book of Allah on that Allah hears and sees. All such Prophetic traditions as are directly transmitted to us by just and reliable narrators always accord to the Qur’ānic teachings. We never hold, Allah forbid, that the Sunnah contradicts the holy Qur’ān or a part of it. Those of the ignorant folk who claim that historically established sunan of the Prophet can contradict the holy Qur’ān [should know that their view is unfounded]. A research and study of over forty years has revealed to us that our view is correct. No historically authentic sunnah contradicts the Qur’ān.

55. (1). Aḥmad b. ‘Abd al-Raḥmān b. Wahb → his uncle → Yūnus b. Yazīd → Ibn Shihāb → ‘Urwah b. al-Zubayr → ‘Ᾱ’shah, the wife of the Prophet:

I asked the Prophet, “Have you ever faced a harder time than the day of Uhd?” The Prophet responded: “Yes. I was troubled more by your tribe. The worst of what I was inflicted by them is when, on the day of ‘Aqabah, I went to ‘Abd Yālīl b. ‘Abd Kulāl. He did not accept what I requested of him. I left him. My face reflected my sorrowfulness. As soon as I was relieved a little, I found myself at a place called Qarn al-Tha‘ālib. I raised my eyes to the heavens. There was a cloud shading me. I looked up and saw Gabriel in the cloud. He called me saying: “O Muḥammad! Almighty Allāh has heard the response of your tribe to you. I am the angel of the mountains. Your Lord has sent me to you so that you could tell me what you want. If you want me to crush these two mountains (akhshabayn) upon them, I shall do it.” I said to him: “Rather I wish Allāh brought forth from among their offspring a nation who worships Allah and does not ascribe partners to Him.””

56. (2). Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. Ḥabīb b. al-Shahīd → al-Mu‘tamir → his father → Abū ‘Uthmān → Abū Mūsā: (….)

Muḥammad b. Bishār and al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ḥasan and others → Bundār and al-Ḥusayn → Marḥūm al-‘Aṭṭār → Abū Nu‘amah al-Sa‘dī → Abū ‘Uthmān al-Nahdī → Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī.

The following is the wording of Marḥūm:

I was in the company of the Messenger of Allah in a battle. When we proceeded and entered Madīnah, the people said a loud takbīr (Allah is great). The Prophet said: “Your Lord is not deaf nor absent.” Al-Mu‘tamir reported the following wording in his version of the ḥadīth, “The Prophet said: “You are not calling a deaf or absent entity.”

57. (3) Salm b. Janādah → Abū Mu‘awiyah →-‘Ᾱṣim → Abū ‘Uthmān → Abū Mūsā:

The same ḥadīth with the following addition: The Prophet:

O People! You are not calling a deaf or absent entity. You are invoking someone who listens and who is near.

Abū Bakr said: I have included different isnāds of this ḥadīth in the chapter al-Dhikr (remembering Allah) and Tasbīḥ, (remembering and glorification)

Abū Bakr said: Listen, O men of understanding, to what we have stated in this regard concerning the confounding of Jahmīs and their falsehood. We have exposed their lies on the traditionist scholars (ahl al-‘āthār) and have shown how they accused the best people after the Prophets of what Allah purified them from, and from which He quitted them. They falsely accused our scholars of committing tashbīh. So listen to what I say and explain concerning the viewpoint of our scholars. Learn and be sure of the fact that Allah has granted us the power to show that these mu‘aṭṭilah have been accusing our scholars of what Allah purified them.

We hold that our Creator has two eyes with which He sees whatever is beneath the soil (al-thurā) under the seventh and the lowest earth. He watches what is hidden in the higher heavens and also that what is hidden between these, small and great. Nothing of these escapes the notice of our Lord. He observes what the depths of the bellies of the oceans contain as easily as He sees the throne upon which He has sat himself.

The children of Adam, though possessed of eyes with which they see, can only see that which is near them and is directly observable. They can observe what is not parted by a screen from their eyes. I do not use the word “near” in all its significations. Sometimes the Arabs use the word (qarīb) near for something which is not actually that near as one can see and observe it. For example the speakers of the Arabic language in which the Qur’ān was revealed say: such and such village is just near to this place or such and such city is near to this place or the hometown of this and that person is near to this place etc even though the place of the speaker and the compared place is distanced by miles. These and similar examples prove that everything describable by the word qarīb may not be seen and observed.

Baṣīr (seers) among the humans cannot see another human being by naked eyes if both are distanced by two leagues or more. Similarly, no human being can see something beneath the earth. If there is as little a thing as an ant over the surface of the earth it covers the surface and does not leave us to see through it. Similarly, humans cannot see something serrated by a solid screen like walls, cloth, or any dense object. How can then, O men of understanding, those who describe Allah’s eyes as we have described and describe the human eyes as we have be called mushabbihah? I intend to detail this issue and explain it fully.

We hold that eyes of Allah are qadīm. They are eternal. Contrarily, the eyes of the humans are accidental (muḥdath). They are created things (makhlūq). The human eye was previously non-existent. It was created (ex nihilo) by Allah by His command kun (Be). The sight of Allah is one of His personal attributes. In contrast, Allah has ordained that the eyes of the humans would face a great trial. We implore Allah to turn this trial better for us in the end (maṣīr khayran). We also know that Allah makes eyes of many of the humans blind. They lose their sight during life. Perhaps the eyes of the most of the human are eaten away by the earthworms after their death in the graves. Allah will give them life before the Last Judgment. They will then go through the stages which we have already discussed regarding the human face. What then, o men of understanding, renders the eyes of the Creator which we described earlier and the eyes of the mortal humans which we have just described similar?

Suppose there is a man blessed with perfect eye-sight. His eyes are free from any blemishes and are adorned with all beauties thought of eyes. For example his eyes are big, black with long eyelashes. If I tell him that his eyes are ugly and small, or that he is blue-eyed or that he is without eyelid, or that he is day blind (hemeralopic), or that his eyes are reddish, the fat of his eyes is red instead of white, or that he cannot see even from ten yards while the others see from a long distance, or that he cannot see because of these problems with his eyes and lack of sight, he will be furious and abusive and will inflict me.

If another just person hears me ascribing faulty characteristics to the eyes of a person with prefect eyes and sound sight he would falsify my assertions. He would even declare me a lunatic on making such an awfully wrong comparison. He would consider me mad. He will tell me: “If you are endowed with understanding you are not to liken the eyes of the one with sound eyes with that of the another person whose eyes have many blemishes even though both can be called baṣīr, for they are not blind after all.” We can rightfully declare that both of them have eyes to see with. Can then we tell either of the two characters that their eyes resemble that of a boar, or monkey, or bear, or dog, or any other predatory animals or pests or quardupes? O men of understanding do the eyes of Allah, which are eternal, everlasting, which are always there and shall always remain, more distinguishable from the eyes of mortal humans or the eyes of the humans from the eyes of the above mention animals?

Whoever declared that our scholars are mushbihah are themselves ignorant to the language of the Arabs. They do not have knowledge. It is not allowable even to compare eyes of the humans with the eyes of the animals and pests even though both groups have eyes to see with. The eyes of all of them are created things. They were not existent and Allah created them. They will perish. Even then it is not valid to stop applying the words eyes for them. How then it is allowable for a Muslim, be they Jahmiīs, to censure those who affirm eyes for Allah as Mushabbihah? If all things called eyes are the same things then it would not be possible to make sense of the word of Allah. It would entail removal of all such verses from the Qur’ān which ascribe nafs, eyes and hands to Him. It would also require that we negated all such attributes of Allah which have been affirmed in the Book just as it is necessary to negate and reject likening the creator with the created things. The ignorant forks (the Jahmīs), however, do not grasp the knowledge nor do they know the Arabic language. They go astray and lead others into error.

We implore Allah’s protection, guidance and help in all we say and call people to.

English Translation of al-Jahshiyari’s Kitab al-Wuzaraʾ wa al-Kuttab: 2

The Scribes Among The Persians The kings of Persia were exceedingly strict with anyone who forged or engraved a seal resembling the royal seal. They considered such a crime equal to the gravest offenses and punished it accordingly. The Persian kings referred to the letter-writers as “the interpreters ( tarājimah ) of kings.” They used to say to them: “Do not let your desire to make speech concise lead you to omit meanings, abandon proper structure and clarity ( al-iblāgh ) in it or weaken the strength of argument.” It was the established practice in the days of the Persians that the younger generation ( aḥdāth al-kuttāb ) of scribes, and those newly emerging among them, would gather at the palace gates seeking employment. The king would then command the heads of his chancery to test them and examine their intellects. Those found worthy would have their names presented to the king and would be instructed to remain at the gate so they could be called upon when needed. The king w...
