18. Eighth Ḥadīth Proving Hands for Allāh: Kitāb al-Tawḥīd (The Book on Monotheism) by Abū Bakr b. Khuzaymah
It has been explained and clarified
that our Creator has two hands both of which are right hands. He has no left
hand. Left had is characteristic of His creatures. Therefore, our Lord is
beyond that He should have a left hand. This we can prove from the words of Allah
Almighty Himself. He says: “(Allāh’s) hand is extended (i.e. generous).” (Q
5:64) The words yadāhu means two hands. It does not mean the two
bounties as claimed by the Jahmīs MuᶜAṭṭilah.

the Prophet:
When Allāh created Adam, and breathed
into him His Spirit (rūḥ), he (Adam) sneezed and said, “alḥamdu
lillāhi” (all thanks are due to Allāh). So he thanked his Lord with His permission.
The Lord said to him: “Allāh has shown His mercy to you, O Adam.” Then He said
to Adam: “Adam, go to those angels, the party sitting there and greet them
saying, assalāmu ᶜalaykum (Peace be upon you).” [This he did].
The angels responded to him saying: “Peace be upon you too, the blessing of
Allāh and his bounties.” Then Adam returned to his Lord. Allah said to him:
“This is your greeting and the greeting of your children and their progeny.”
Then Allāh said to Adam while His hands were closed: “Choose any of these two
hands that you want.” Adam said: “I choose the right hand, My Lord. Both hands
of my Lord are right hands and are blessed.” Then He opened them. There were
Adam and his offspring in them. Adam said: “O Lord, who are they?” Allah said:
“These are your children.” At that time, life span of men was written between
their eyes. Among them there was a man, the brightest of all. It was indicated
that he would live only for forty years. Adam said, “O my lord, who is this
man?” Allah said, “He is your son David. I have ordained forty years for him.”
Adam said: “Add to his life span.” Allāh said: “This has been already ordained
for him.” He (Adam) said, “I lend him seventy years from my life.” Allah said:
“You are granted your wish.” Allah let Adam abode in the garden (jannah)
as long as He willed. Then He expelled Adam from it. While Adam was expecting
himself to live more the angel of death came to him. Adam said to the angel:
“You have come earlier [than the expected time]. I had been granted a life span
of one thousand years.” The angel said: “Your are right. But you lent seventy
years of your life to your son David.” Thus Adam argued and likewise his
children did argue. He forgot and his brood also forgot. It was on that day
that Allah commanded to write [the contracts] and to bear witness to them.
This is the wording of the ḥadīth
of Bundār. He however, added the words: “Allāh has blessed you O Adam.” He also
added: “Or among the brightest ones among them.” He also added the words: “What
is this, my Lord?” Abū Mūsā has the words: “his life span is written with him.”
He did not say: “between his eyes.” He also said: “While Adam had been granted
one thousand years.” His wording also includes the following: “While he saw a
man among them the most beloved of all or the brightest of all, whose life span
was written to be forty years only.” He too used the words: “O my Lord, what is
this?” Allāh said: “This is your son David.” And Adam said, “O my lord, make an
increase in his life.” He also has the following different words in his
version: “You have got to me before the appointed time. Did not Allah write for
me one thousand years?” And he has the words: “What you yourself did.” And he
argued.” Yaḥyā b. Ḥakīm too used the same wording in this portion
of the narrative as did Abū Mūsā.

Munabbih →Abū Hurayrah the Prophet:
Allāh’s right hand is his always full.
Spending does not decrease anything from it. Do you not see that He has
[continuously] spent since the creation of the heavens and the earth? Even this
huge spending has not incurred any loss in what His right hand contains. And
[the Prophet] said: “His throne was over the water and in His other right-hand
is the control of [rest of the things]. He lifts [the destinies of the
creatures] and lowers [them].
This is the wording of the ḥadīth
of ᶜAbd
al-Rahmān. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā said in
his ḥadīth that Allāh’s right hand is the upper one and no charity
given in the days and the nights can cause it to decrease. And he (Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā) uses the words: “Nothing lessens
whatever is in His right hand and His throne is over waters and His other hand
controls [the created things].
