Miscellaneous Reports on Divine Attributes, Faith, and Intercession

Miscellanea

The following reports also relate to different issues which we have mentioned in this book.

597. (1) Ibrāhīm b. ᶜAbd al-ᶜAzīz al-Muqawwim → ᶜAbd al-Raḥmān b. ᶜUthmān → Abū Bakr al-Bakrāwī → Shuᶜbah → Qatādah → Anas:

Muhammad saw his Lord.

2. (598) Bundār → ᶜAbd al-Wahhāb → Khālid → Abū Qilābah → al-Nuᶜmān b. Bashīr:

The sun eclipsed during the time of the Prophet. He came out seizing his cloth in fear and walked to the mosque. He continued offering Prayer till the eclipse was over. When it was over, he said:

People think that an eclipse of the sun or moon signifies the death of some great personality. They do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone, but they are signs of Allāh. When Allāh appears to something from His creation, it fears from Him. When you see something like this, offer Prayer the way you offer the obligatory Prayers.

Abū Bakr said: This narrative, in its meaning, is similar to the Divine statement: “When his Lord manifested His glory on the Mount, He made it as dust.” (Q 7:143)

As far as I know, Abū Qilābah did not hear anything from al-Nuᶜmān b. Bashīr, nor did he ever meet him.

599. (3) ᶜAbdah b. ᶜAbd Allāh al-Khuzāᶜī → Mūsā b. Ibrāhīm → Ṭalḥah b. Khirāsh:

Jābir b. ᶜAbd Allāh met me. He told me that the Prophet met him and said, “O Jābir, why do I see you so depressed?” I said, “O Prophet, my father was martyred and he left for me some debts to repay and a family to provide.” He said, “Should I not tell you how Allāh met your father? Allāh does not talk to anyone except from behind a curtain. However, He returned your father to life and talked to him directly and said: “O my servant: Wish whatever you want; I will give it to you.” He said, “Send me back to the world so that I should fight for Your cause.” The Almighty said, “Never. I have sworn on myself that they (i.e. the dead) will not be returned to it (i.e. the world).””

4. (….) Yaḥyā b. Ḥabīb b. ᶜArabī → Mūsā b. Kathīr al-Anṣārī al-Madanī:

The same narrative.

600. (5) ᶜAlī b. Khashram → Abū Muᶜāwiyah → al-Aᶜmash → ᶜUmārah b. ᶜUmayr → ᶜAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd → ᶜAbd Allāh:

I was hiding behind the curtains of the Kaᶜbah. Three individuals came there who had stout bellies but little understanding. It was either a Qarshī man and his two Thaqafī sons-in-law or a Thaqafī man with his two Qarshī sons-in-law. They said things to one another that I could not make out. One of them said, “Do you think that Allāh is hearing our talk?” The other one replied, “I think that when we raise our voice He hears it. When we do not raise it, He does not hear it.” The other one said, “If He hears a part of our talk, He hears all of it.” ᶜAbd Allāh said:

I related this story to the Prophet. This occasioned the revelation of the following verse:

Ye did not seek to hide yourselves, lest your hearing, your sight, and your skins should bear witness against you! (Q 41:22) …. to the end of the verse.

Abū Bakr said: A narrative attributed to Ibn Masᶜūd, which I have included in Kitāb al-Jihād, deals with the Divine saying:

Think not of those who are slain in Allāh’s way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord.” (Q 3:169)

It says: “……. in Paradise. Allāh will rise above them (fayaṭṭaliᶜu) once (iṭṭilā‘) and ask them, “Do you wish anything else that I should provide you?”

Those who have sound knowledge of the language of the Arabs know that iṭṭilā‘ (rising) is always done by a thing which is higher and this rising thing is said to have risen in relation to something which is lower spatially. The Jahmīs think that Allāh is with every human being and is even lower than them and is in the lowest, the seventh earth, just as He is on the seventh heaven, the highest of all. If it were true, the words “He will rise above them” would be meaningless.

601. (6) Muhammad b. Maᶜmar al-Qaysī → Yaḥyā b. Ḥammād → Abū ᶜAwānah → Sulaymān → Abū Ṣāliḥ → Abū Hurayrah → the Prophet:

The angels of the day and the angels of the night gather together at the time of Morning Prayer and ᶜAṣr Prayer. They get together and the angels of the night go back and the angels of the day settle. Your Lord asks them (the party reaching back into the heavens), “How did you leave my servants?” They say, “We joined them when they were offering Prayer and we left them when they were offering Prayer.”

Abū Bakr said: I have included the aḥādīth on this issue in Kitāb al-Salāh (Chapter on the Prayer). This narrative contains that which clarifies and proves that Allāh is on the heaven and that the angels rise toward Him from the earth. This is not as the Jahmīs al-Muᶜaṭṭilah believe. They think that Allāh is on earth just as He is on the heaven. Had he been on the earth, the angels would come to Him on earth or descend to the lowest earth to meet Him. May Allāh curse these Jahmīs al-Muᶜaṭṭilah.

602. (7) Salamah b. Shabīb → Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭiyālisī → al-Masᶜūdī → al-Minhāl b. ᶜAmr → Abū ᶜUbaydah → ᶜAbd Allāh:

Hurry to the Friday congregation because Allāh reveals Himself to the dwellers of Paradise every Friday in an anthill made of white camphor. People will come near to Him in direct proportion to their efforts to hurry towards the Friday congregation. He creates for them bounties which they have never seen before. Then they return to their families and Allāh has made everything new for them.

ᶜAbd Allāh b. Masᶜūd went out to join the Friday congregation. On the way to the mosque, two other men overtook him. ᶜAbd Allāh said, “I am behind two persons. I hope Allāh blesses the third position.”

603. (8) Muhammad b. Abī Ṣafwān al-Thaqafī → ᶜAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī → Ḥammād b. Salamah → Yaᶜlā b. ᶜAṭāᵓ → Wakīᶜ b. Ḥadas → his uncle Abū Razīn:

I said, “O Prophet, will each of us see his Lord on the Day of Judgment? What is the sign of it in His creatures?” He said, “Do not you see the moon individually?” He said, “I said that we do.” He said, “Allāh is greater [than the sun, therefore, can He be seen more easily.]”

604. (9) Abū al-Ashᶜath Aḥmad b. al-Miqdām al-ᶜAjalī → al-Muᶜtamir → Ismāᶜīl b. Abī Khālid → ᶜĀmir → ᶜAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Nawfal → Kaᶜb:

Allāh has divided the [blessings] of seeing Him and being spoken to by Him between Muhammad and Moses, so Muhammad saw Him twice while He talked to Moses twice.

ᶜĀmir said: Musrūq went to ᶜĀᵓishah:….

He (the narrator) related the whole narrative.

605. (10) Muhammad b. Maᶜmar al-Qaysī → Rawḥ b. ‘Ibādah → Ḥammād b. Salamah → ᶜAṭāᵓ b. al-Sāᵓib → Murrah al-Hamdānī → Ibn Masᶜūd → the Prophet

Two persons please Allāh Almighty: the man who prefers offering Prayer, leaving his bed and beloved family behind. Our Lord says, “Look at my servant. He parts from his bed and prefers his Prayer over his family and the beloved ones, seeking what is with Me [as reward] and fearing what is with Me [as punishment]. The other is the one who fights for the cause of Allāh. His enemies circumvent him. He knows what he will burden himself with if he flees. He also knows the rewards he will earn if he resumes fighting. He decides to return to fight and is felled. He pours out his blood seeking what is with Me [as reward] and fearing what is with Me [as punishment].”

Allah says to the angels, “Look at my servant. He returned seeking what is with Me [as a reward] and fearing what is due from me [as punishment] till his blood has been shed.”

606. (11) Muhammad b. al-ᶜAlāᵓ b. Kurayb → Abū Usāmah → Sufyān → Qays b. Murrah:

Interpreting the verse: “For indeed he saw him at a second descent,” (Q 53:13) he said, “He saw Gabriel. In the hair on his two feet there was something like dew on herbaceous plants.”

607. (12) ᶜAlī b. Khashram → ᶜĪsā b. Yūnus → al-Aᶜmash → Ibrāhīm → ᶜAlqamah → ᶜAbd Allāh:

A man from the People of the Book came to Allah’s Apostle and said, “Abū al-Qāṣim, Allah created the heavens on one finger, and the earths on one finger, and the trees on one finger, and moist earth on one finger, and the creatures on one finger. Then He said, “I am the Sovereign.”

He (the narrator) further said:

I saw Allah’s Messenger smiling so much that his front teeth became visible and then he recited the verse: “And they honour not Allah with the honour due to Him. (Q 39:67).”

608. (13) ᶜĪsā b. Abī Ḥarab → Yaḥyā b. Abī Bukayr → Bishr b. Ḥusayn Abū Muhammad al-Aṣbahānī → al-Zubayr b. ᶜAdī → Anas b. Mālik → the Prophet:

Allāh says:

My servant has contradicted Me and it was not for him to contradict Me; he abused Me and he was not for him to abuse Me. As for as his rejection is concerned, it relates to His saying, “Allāh won’t be able to recreate us like He did the first time.” By it he means that it will be hard for Us to create him again.

ᶜĪsā b. Ḥarab did not say these words nor are these found in his book.

As for his abusing Me, he says, “Allāh has taken for Him a son.” Whereas I am the one and only, independent. I did not beget any nor have I been begotten. And there is none like Me.

609. (14) Muhammad b. Bashshār → Yaḥyā b. Ḥammād → Shuᶜbah → Abān b. Taghlab → Fuḍayl → Ibrāhīm → ᶜAlqamah → ᶜAbd Allāh → the Prophet:

He who has an atom of pride in his heart will not enter Paradise. He who has in his heart an atom of faith will not enter the Fire. A man said, “O Prophet, everybody wants to be soberly dressed and have good footwear.” The Prophet said, “Allāh is beautiful and loves beauty. Pride is only rejecting the truth in contempt and behaving rudely to others.”

Abū Bakr said: Sometimes the Arabs use a verbal noun while they intend to refer to the doer of the action. In this sentence it has been said: al-kibar (haughtiness/conceit). It refers to the one who disdainfully rejects the truth (man baṭara al-ḥaqq). In fact al-kibr is an act done by a mutakabbir (conceited/haughty man). Thus he means to say: al-kibr is what is done by a man who haughtily rejects the truth and disdains the people.

610. (15) Muhammad b. Bashshār → ᶜAbd al-Raḥmān → Shuᶜbah → al-Suddī → Murrah → ᶜAbd Allāh:

Interpreting the verse: “Not one of you but will pass over it: this is, with thy Lord, a Decree which must be accomplished.” (Q 19:71) He said:

They are made to fall in it and are saved from it because of their good deeds. ᶜAbd al-Raḥmān said:

I said to Shuᶜbah, “Isrāᵓīl has narrated to me from al-Suddī who narrated from Murrah who narrated from ᶜAbd Allāh who narrated from the Prophet.” Shuᶜbah replied, “I heard it from al-Suddī who attributed it to the Prophet but I deliberately ignored that version.”

Abū Bakr said: Yaḥyā b. Saᶜīd also reported it from Shuᶜbah who traced it back to the Prophet.

…... (16) Bundār → Yaḥyā b. Saᶜīd → Shuᶜbah:

….. (17) Aḥmad b. ᶜAbd al-Raḥmān b. Wahb → his uncle → ᶜAmr b. al-Ḥārith → ᶜAmr b. Dīnār → Jābir b. ᶜAbd Allāh:

My two ears heard the Prophet saying, “A number of people will be taken out of the Fire.”

611. (18) ᶜAbd Allāh b. Muhammad al-Zuhrī → Sufyān → Maᶜmar → Ibn Ṭāwūs → his father:

I heard Ibn ᶜAbbās saying:

O my Lord! Accept the great intercession of Muhammad and raise his ranks to heights and grant his wishes which he made in this world and those he will make on the Last Day as you granted the wishes of Abraham and Moses.

612. (19) Abū Mūsā → Muᶜādh b. Hishām → his father → Qatādah → Anas → the Prophet

Many people will be punished by the Fire for the sins they would have committed. Then Allāh will retrieve them back to Paradise with His Mercy.

613. (20) Abū Mūsā → Muᶜādh b. Hishām → his father → Qatādah → Anas b. Mālik → the Apostle of Allāh:

For every Prophet, there is one special invocation (that will not be rejected) with which he appeals (to Allah) regarding his ummah, and I have kept my invocation for interceding for my followers in the Hereafter.

614. (21) Muhammad b. Bashshār → Muslim b. Ibrāhīm → Hammām → Qatādah:

I said to Bilāl b. Abī Burdah, “Al-Ḥasan narrated to me that Abū Mūsā al-Ashᶜarī had a brother called Abū Zayd. He was quick at jumping in fights and al-Ashᶜarī would forbid him. He said:

Had you not told me this, I would never have narrated to you [the following ḥadīth]. I heard the Prophet saying:

No two Muslims face each other with their swords while one of them kills the other but they both go to Hell.

It was asked, “The [matter of the] killer [is understandable]. Why the one killed [faces Hell]?” He said, “He was intent upon killing the other man. Bilāl said: I do not know this report by them.”

615. (22) Muhammad b. al-Sakam b. Ibrāhīm al-Aylī → Abū ᶜĀmir → Hishām b. Saᶜd b. ‘Uqbah:

Muᶜāwiyah was addressing people. He uttered something unacceptable to the audience. A young man replied to him. It pleased and surprised Muᶜāwiyah. Then he said:

I heard the Prophet saying, “Soon there would be rulers who would say things and people would not say the same to them in return. These rulers (and the people) will be thrown in Hell one after the other.”

616. (23) Yaḥyā b. Muhammad b. al-Sakan al-Bazzār → Bakr b. Bakkār → Qays b. Salīm → Yazīd b. Ṣuhayb al-Faqīr → Jābir b. ᶜAbd Allāh → the Prophet:

A people will be got out of the Fire, quite burnt except their faces. They will enter Paradise.

617. (24) ᶜAbd Allāh b. Isḥāq al-Jawharī → Badal b. al-Muḥabbir → Zāᵓidah → ᶜAbd Allāh b. Muhammad b. ᶜAqīl → Ibn ᶜUmar → ᶜUmar:

The Prophet ordered to announce to the people that whoever sincerely witnessed that there is no god except Allāh, who is alone and has no partner with Him, will have Paradise.

ᶜUmar said, “Would they depend on it alone?” He said, “Then leave it.”

618. (25) ᶜAbd Allāh b. Isḥāq al-Jawharī → Abū ᶜĀṣim → Wabrah b. Abī Dalīlah → Muhammad b. ᶜAbd Allāh b. Maymūn → Yaᶜqūb b. ᶜĀṣim:

Two of the Companions heard the Prophet saying:

He who says that there is no god but Allāh; He is alone and has no partners; to Him belongs all sovereignty; all gratitude is due to Him; He gives life and also death; and He has power over all things, while his soul is sincerely devoted to seeking Allah’s pleasure, his tongue declares this and his heart believes in it, the skies are split open for him so that the Lord sees him who affirms these assertions in the world. It is the right of a servant of Allah to whom He looks that he be granted what he seeks from Him.

Abū Bakr said: Each of these narratives should be attached to a proper place in the relevant discussions. I have explained the meanings of all such narratives in those chapters. I have shown how the wording of the narratives conforms to their general meanings even though the ignorant and crooked folk may consider their different versions mutually contradicting.

619. (26) Aḥmad b. ᶜAbd al-Raḥmān b. Wahb → his uncle → ᶜAmr → Jaᶜfar b. Rabīᶜah → ‘Irāk b. Mālik → Abū Hurayrah → the Prophet:

Do not turn away from your fathers. The one who turns away from his father actually rejects faith (kafara).

Abū Bakr said: The expression (qad kafara) forms part of a manner of expression which I have explained in Kitāb al-Īmān (Book of Faith). I explained that the word kufr is sometimes used to denote a grievous sin which does not completely negate the belief of the one who commits it. It hurts his faith but does not remove it completely. I have sufficiently clarified this issue in that discussion.

620. (27) Muhammad b. Yaḥyā narrated to us, following a mention of the ḥadīth of ᶜAṭāᵓ b. Yasār, that Abū Saᶜīd narrated to him, in connection with a mention of the people of exalted chambers (al-ghuraf) in Paradise, that Surayḥ b. al-Nuᶜmān narrated to him that Fulayḥ narrated from Hilāl b. ᶜAlī who narrated from ᶜAṭāᵓ b. Yasār who narrated from Abū Hurayrah that the Prophet said:

The people of Paradise will see the ghuraf (special high chambers) in Paradise.

He had in mind the ḥadīth reported by Abū Saᶜīd from the Prophet.

Abū Bakr said: Muhammad b. Yaḥyā told us: I do not consider it improbable that ᶜAṭāᵓ b. Yasār heard it from Abū Saᶜīd and also from Abū Hurayrah.

The above passage is translated from Kitāb al-Tawḥīd by Imām Abū Bakr Ibn Khuzaymah (d. 311 AH). English translation by Dr Tariq Mahmood Hashmi.

English Translation of al-Jahshiyari’s Kitab al-Wuzaraʾ wa al-Kuttab: 2

The Scribes Among The Persians The kings of Persia were exceedingly strict with anyone who forged or engraved a seal resembling the royal seal. They considered such a crime equal to the gravest offenses and punished it accordingly. The Persian kings referred to the letter-writers as “the interpreters ( tarājimah ) of kings.” They used to say to them: “Do not let your desire to make speech concise lead you to omit meanings, abandon proper structure and clarity ( al-iblāgh ) in it or weaken the strength of argument.” It was the established practice in the days of the Persians that the younger generation ( aḥdāth al-kuttāb ) of scribes, and those newly emerging among them, would gather at the palace gates seeking employment. The king would then command the heads of his chancery to test them and examine their intellects. Those found worthy would have their names presented to the king and would be instructed to remain at the gate so they could be called upon when needed. The king w...
