7. On Allah's Eyes
Our creator has affirmed in the holy
Qur’ān and through the tongue of His Prophet that He has eyes. Allah Almighty
said to his Prophet Noah: “Construct an ark under Our eyes and inspiration (waḥy).”
(Q 11:37) He said: “While it floated under our eyes.” (Q 54:14) Allah said to
Moses: “I cast love over you from Me and in order that you may be reared under
My eye.” (Q 20:39). He said: “Now await in patience the command of your Lord:
for verily you are in Our eyes.” (Q 52:48)
Every believer must affirm for his
Creator what the Creator has affirmed Himself about His eyes besides other
attributes. Those who negate what Allah has affirmed about Himself in the holy
Qur’ān are non-believers. What Allah has affirmed in the holy Qur’ān has
further been elaborated upon by the Prophet of Allah who was appointed as
explicator of the word of Allah. For the Almighty says in the holy Qur’ān: “And
We have sent down to you the reminder; that you may explain clearly to men what
is sent for them.” (Q 16:44) The Prophet has made it clear that Allah has two
eyes. The Prophetic words accords to the revelation of Allah, contained between
the covers (bayn al-duffatayn) and that which is read in arches and
religious schools.

b. Yazīd al-Muqrī’ → Ḥarmalah b. ‘Imrān al-Tujībī →
Abū Yūnus Salaym b. Jubayr, the freed slave of Abū Hurayrah:
Abū Hurayrah said concerning the verse:
“Allah does command you to render back your trusts to those to whom they are
due; and when you judge between man and man, that you judge with justice:
Verily how excellent is the teaching which He gives you! For Allah hears and
sees all things”. (Q 4:58). I saw the Prophet put his thumb on his ears and his
index finger on his eyes. Abū Hurayrah said, “I saw the Prophet doing this.”
47. (2) Muḥammad → ‘Abdullāh
b. Yazīd al-Muqrī → his father (Yazīd al-Muqrī) → Ḥarmalah
b. ‘Imrān →
Abū Yūnas:
I heard Abū Hurayrah reciting this verse:
“Allah does command you to render back your trusts to those to whom they are
due.” (Q 4:58) He recited the whole verse. He put his thumb on his ears and the
next (index) finger on his eyes and he said:
I saw the Prophet reciting (the words al-samī‘
and al-baṣīr in) this verse and putting his fingers (on his ears and
eyes) this way.
48. (3) Abū Bakr said: Isḥāq b. Mūsā b. ‘Abdullāh (b. Mūsā b. ‘Abdullāh) b.
Yazīd b. Ḥiṣn al-Khaṭmī al-Anṣārī dictated this narrative to a group of my
fellows. I too was present in that meeting. I wrote it myself. However, I am
afraid that I might have taken some part of the wording of the narrative from
al-Mustamlī (the person who dictated the words of the ḥadīth).
He also dictated to us (this narrative)
on the authority of Anas b. ‘Iyāḍ → ‘Ubayd
Allāh b. ‘Umar → Nāfi‘ (the freed slave of ‘Abdullāh b.
‘Umar) → ‘Abdullāh b. ‘Umar →
the Prophet:
Allah is not one-eyed. However, dajjāl
is one-eyed, his right eye is as a swollen grape.
49. (4) Yaḥyā b. Ḥakīm
→ ‘Abd al-Wahhāb, b. ‘Abd al-Ḥamīd
al-Thaqafī → ‘Ubayd
Allāh → Nafi‘ → Ibn
‘Umar:
The Prophet mentioned dajjāl in front
of people and said, “O, people! Your lord is not one-eyed. Dajjāl is one-eyed.
His right eye is like a swollen grape.”
50. (5) Al-Ḥasan b. Qaza‘ah b. ‘Ubayd
al-Hashimī → ‘Aṣim b. Hilāl (al-Bāriqī) →
Ayyūb → Nāfi‘ → ‘Abdullāh
→ the Prophet:
Beware! Allah is not one-eyed. Beware!
Dajjāl is one-eyed. His right eye is like a swollen grape.
51. (6) Muḥammad b. Bashshār →
Muḥammad b. Ja‘far → Shu‘bah → Simāk →
‘Ikramah → Ibn ‘Abbās →
the Prophet:
Dajjāl is one-eyed, camel rider. ‘Abd
al-‘Uzzā b. Quṭn resembles him most. As for those of the wretched who are
destined to perish will perish. Your Lord, however, is not one-eyed.
Muḥammad b. Ja‘far said that Shu‘bah
said, “I narrated this to Qatādah who reported a similar narrative to me.”
52. (7) Muḥammad b. Bashshār →
Abū ‘Ᾱmir →
Ibrāhīm (b. Ṭahmān) → Abū al-Zubayr →
Jābir (b. ‘Abdullāh):
The Prophet said, “Dajjāl will appear quickly.”
Then he reported the entire ḥadīth which included the following
information:
He (dajjāl) will come to the people
and claim to be their Lord. He will be one-eyed. He (your Lord) is not
one-eyed.
53. (8) Aḥmad b. ‘Abd al-Rahmān b.
Wahb → his uncle (‘Abdullāh b. Wahb) → Makhramah
b. Bukayr b. ‘Abdullāh b. al-Ashaj → his
father → ‘Urwah b. al-Zubayr →
Umm-i Salamah, the wife of the Prophet:
One night I thought of the dajjāl. I
could not sleep. The next morning I came to the Prophet and told him my
experience. He said, “Do not worry like that. If he appears during my life Allah
will suffice you as protector through me. If, however, he comes after my
departure Allah will suffice you as protector through his pious servants.” Then
the Prophet said: “Every Prophet has warned his followers of dajjāl. I
too warn you of him. Know he is one-eyed. Allah is not one-eyed. He will walk
on the earth. The earth and heavens belong to Allah. The right eye of dajjāl
is just like a swollen grape.”
Abū Bakr said these narratives form a
very long chapter. I have mentioned them all in Kitāb al-Fitan in the
story of dajjāl.
54. (9). ‘Abd al-Quddūs b. Muḥammad b.
Shu‘ayb
→ his uncle, (‘Umar b.) Ṣāliḥ
b. ‘Abd
al-Kabīr
→ his uncle, Abū Bakr b. Shu‘ayb →
his father → Anas b. Mālik →
the Messenger of Allah:
I warn you of dajjāl. That he is one-eyed. His right eye is damaged. Your Lord is not one-eyed. Between his two eyes is written: K F R. Every believer will read it (even through every believer is not literate.)
