9. Kitāb al-Tawḥīd: On the Light and Glory of Allah’s Face: Arguments from the Prophetic Traditions
6.1 On the Light and Glory of Allah’s Face: Arguments from the Prophetic Traditions
These
are sound prophetic traditions which have been incorrectly interpreted (ta’awwalahā)
by those who lack sound knowledge. This put a group of people from among the
ignorant folk in great trial. Their ignorance has led them to believe that the
narratives give meaning implying tashbīh. Allah is pure from having a
face like that of His creatures. He attributed glory and honor to His Face. He
ordained that His Face would not perish. These narratives follow:
35. (1) Rabī ‘ b. Sulaymān al-Murādī → Shu‘ayb (b. al-Layth) → al-Layth → Muḥammad b. ‘Ajlān → Sa‘īd b. Abī Sa‘īd
al-Maqbarī → Abū Hurayrah → the Messenger of Allah:
Nobody should say to the other, “May Allah disfigure your
face and the face that resembles yours” for Allah created Adam in his image.
36.
(2) Rabī‘ has
narrated, through the same isnād, another similar tradition which says:
The Prophet said:
When any among you strikes another man, he should avoid
striking the face. For Allah created Adam in His image.
37.
(3) Abū Mūsā Muḥammad b. al-Muthannā → Yaḥyā b. Sa‘īd →
Ibn ‘Ajlān → Sa‘īd → Abū Hurayrah → the Prophet:
When you strike someone avoid hitting him in the face. [He
should also avoid cursing him by saying], “May Allah disfigure your face and the
face of those whose faces resemble yours! For Allah has created Adam in his
image.”
38.
(4) Bundār →Yaḥyā b. Sa‘īd → Ibn. ‘Ajlān → Sa‘īd b. Abī Sa‘īd → Abū Hurayrah →
the Prophet:
When one among you beats another person he should avoid
hitting the face. He should also avoid cursing his brother by saying, “May
Allah distort your face.” This is similar to the ḥadīth of Abū Mūsā.
39.
(5) Abū Mūsā → Yaḥyā → Ibn ‘Ajlān → his father (‘Ajlān) → Abū Hurayrah →
Prophet:
When anyone among you hits (another person) he should avoid
hitting the face.
Abū
Bakr comments: The
report by Ibn ‘Ajlān is confined to this statement. It does not contain more
details.
40.
(6) Naṣr b. ‘Alī al-Jahḍamī → his father (‘Alī) → al-Muthannā b. Sa‘īd →
Qatādah → Abū Ayyūb (al-Azdī ‘Abd al-Malik b. Mālik al-Marāghī) →
Abū Hurayrah → Prophet:
When anyone fights he should not hit the face of the
opponent. Allah created Adam in his image.
Abū
Bakr said: Some people, lacking sound knowledge, believe that the prophetic
words ‘alā ṣūratihī (in his image) means the
countenance of Allah. Our Lord, Allah is above such limitations. This meaning
of the report cannot be held true. It must not be applied to Him. The true
meaning of the words ‘alā ṣūratihī follows: The pronoun hī (his) in this place attributes
the preceding word wajh to the beaten person (maḍrūb) or the one
abused (mashtūm). The correct meaning, therefore, is that Allah created
Adam in the image of this victim (maḍrūb), the man who is being struck.
In the other ḥadīth which prohibits abusing and cursing the face of the
other individuals, the pronoun in “his face” refers to the face of the person
being cursed and abused (mashtūm). The Prophet prohibits saying “May
your face be disfigured and of the one whose face resembles yours.” For the
face of Adam resembled the face of his progeny. When someone among the humans
abuses another human being by saying, “May your face be distorted and of the
one whose face resembles yours,” he would be condemning the face of Adam whose
face was a model for the faces of his progeny. So understand O people, May
Allah shower His mercy on you, the correct meaning of the narrative. Do not
commit error and cause others to err and avoid straying from the right path and
giving the ḥadīth a meaning which entails tashbīh, which is an
open waywardness.
41.
(7) Another narrative has even more obscure wording which follows:
Yūsaf
b. Mūsā → Jarīr → al-A‘mash → Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābiṭ → ‘Aṭā’ b. Abī Rabāḥ →
Ibn ‘Umar → the Prophet:
Do not abuse the faces. Faces of the sons of Adam have been
created in the image of al-raḥmān (the merciful).
42.
(8) Al-Thawrī has reported this narrative in a mursal form instead of musnad.
It follows:
Abū
Mūsā Muḥammad b. al-Muthannā → ‘Abd al-Rahmān b. al-Mahdī → Sufyān (al-Thawrī) →
Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābiṭ → ‘Aṭā’ → the Prophet:
No one should abuse the face of a fellow for the faces of the
children of Adam have been created in the image of al-raḥmān.
Abū
Bakr said: Those lacking sound knowledge have been put to great trial by this
wording in the tradition transmitted by ‘Aṭā’. They believed that the fact that the image (ṣūrah) has
been ascribed to al-raḥmān. This is an example of personal attribute.
In this issue, thus, they fell in clear and obvious mistake. They utter a very
serious and grave statement which is similar to the views of the mushabbihah.
May Allah protect us and all the believers from holding such a view!
What
I have to say with regards to the interpretation of this report follows. Though
I believe that this ḥadīth is directly traced back to the Prophet and
is acceptable as a valid report yet it suffers from three problems (‘ilal).
First,
al-Thawrī has contradicted al-‘Amash in that he reported the ḥadīth as mursal.
He did not include the words “from Ibn ‘Umar.”
Second,
al-A‘mash is a mudallis (the one who commits tadlīs)[1]. He has not explained that
he has actually heard the narrative from Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit.
Third,
Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit himself is a mudallis. He has not revealed that he
received the ḥadīth from ‘Aṭā’. I have heard from Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. Ḥabīb b. Shahīd saying:
Narrated Abū Bakr b. ‘Ayyāsh from al-A‘mash who narrated that
Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit said (to ‘Aṭā’), “If somebody narrates a tradition on
your authority I would not consider it improper to narrate it directly on your
authority (i.e, ascribe to you).” He means to say that he would present a
report received indirectly as he had received it directly. He would commit tadlīs.
Abū
Bakr said: Narratives of this category are not adduced as evidence by the
traditionist scholars. If a narrative deals with issue which must contain
epistemological certitude for what it reports demands our belief in it then more
care is necessary. In such matters, this kind of ḥadīth is not
considered valid proof. Nor are they used as proof regarding matters which
oblige practice (yūjib al-‘amal instead of certain knowledge) after
their reliability is ascertained through naẓarī arguments,[2] similarities, analogies
and others on the basis of other prophetic sunan following the method of
deriving legal rulings and fiqh.
If
this ḥadīth is a sound (ṣaḥīḥ) prophetic tradition (musnad)
and, granted that al-A‘mash heard it directly from Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit and
Ḥabīb heard it directly from ‘Aṭā’ b. Abī Ribāḥ, who narrated it from Ibn ‘Umar, in the wording
narrated by al-A‘mash, then the meaning of this ḥadīth would be,
according to us, that attribution of image to al-Raḥmān (the Merciful)
in this narrative, in fact, is an instance of attributing His creatures to Him.
Creatures,
we know, can be attributed to Allah. He has created them. In the same way ṣūrah
(image) can be attributed to Allah for Allah has formed it. Have you not
considered the following divine statement: “Such is the creation of Allah (khalq
allāhi): Now show Me what is there that others besides Him have created.”
(Q 31:11) Here Allah has attributed the creations to Himself. This is similar
to the statement that Allah is the owner of all His creations. Another similar
statement is the following: “This she-camel of Allah (nāqat allāh) is a
sign for you.” (Q 07:73) Here Allah has attributed the she-camel to Himself.
Regarding the same she-camel He says: “So leave her to graze in Allāh’s earth (arḍ
allāhī)” (Q 07:73) He also said: “Was not the earth of Allah (arḍ
allāhī) spacious enough for you to move yourselves in it?” (Q 4:97) He
said: “For the earth is Allah's (al-arḍu lillāhī), to give as a
heritage to such of His servants as He pleases.” (Q 7:128)
In
these verses, Allah attributes the earth to Himself. Allah Himself created it
under His control and stretched it. He said: “Allāh’s fiṭrah"
(nature), according to the pattern on which He has created mankind.” (Q 30:30)
In this verse Allah attributed fiṭrah to Himself. All things Allah has
attributed to Himself in two aspects. Either:
a.
He attributes to Himself some of His Personal Attributes
b.
or He ascribes to Himself any of His Creatures
You
need to appreciate both of these nuances. Do not confuse them. Granted that the
narrative under consideration is sound and has been directly reported from the Prophet
(musnadan), then the meaning would be as follows: Allah created the sons
of Adam in the image created by Allah before giving Adam his form and blowing
the spirit in him. Allah says: “Who created you and gave you shape.” (Q 7:11)
The following evidences prove the soundness of my interpretation:
43.
(9) Abū Mūsā Muḥammad
b. Muthannā → Abū ‘Ᾱmir ‘Abd al-Malik b. ‘Amr → al-Mughīrah (b. ‘Abd
al-Raḥmān) →
Abū al-Zinād → Mūsā b. Abī ‘Uthmān →
his father (Abū ‘Uthmān) →
Abū Hurayrah → the Prophet:
Allah created Adam in his image. He was sixty cubits long.
44.
(10) ‘Abd al-Raḥmān b. Bishr b. al-Ḥakam → ‘Abd al-Razzāq →
Ma‘mar:
Hamām b. Munabbih said that this is what Abū
Hurayrah narrated from the Prophet. Then he mentioned some narratives which
include:
The Prophet of Allah said:
Allah created Adam in his image. He was sixty cubits long.
When Allah had created him He said, “Go and greet this group of sitting angels.
Listen what they say in response for that would be your greetings and greetings
of your progeny.” He (the Prophet) said, “Adam went near them and greeted them
saying assalām-o-‘alaykum (peace be upon you).” The angels said, “assalām
o ‘alaykum wa raḥmat Allāh (peace and Allah’s mercy be upon you).” They
added the words raḥmat Allāh in the original greeting by Adam.
The Prophet added that all those as will enter the jannah will be in the
image of Adam whose length is sixty cubits. Human length has been decreasing
since then.
Abū
Bakr said: The ṣūrah of Adam, after which he was created, was sixty
cubits long, as the Prophet has told us not as those lacking sound knowledge
have supposed. Such have believed that the words ‘alā ṣūratihī refer to the ṣūrat of Raḥmān, an attribute
among the personal attributes of Allah. He is above and beyond that humans and
inanimate attributes are predicated of him. Allah has declared Himself pure
from the attributes of the created things. Allah says, “Nothing is like Him. He
is the hearer and the seer.” (Q 42:11) He is as He has described Himself in His
Book and through the tongue of His Prophet. He has no attributes like that of
the living creatures. Nor of the dead ones. He is not like Allah of the Jahmīs
who have compared their Allah with the dead and inanimate things. He is also
not like the deity of the rawāfiḍ who compared their deity with the
children of Adam. May Allah disgrace these two statements and disfigure their
upholders.

Translated by Tariq Mahmood Hashmi
